Together, they made
their way to the city. It was hidden in the deep forest, a modest-sized city
surrounded by a stone wall a few storeys high. The road turned from the muddy
dirt trail into a cobblestone road right before they entered clear-cut area. After
being asked by the traveller, the fair-haired guard explained that the city was
nothing more than a remote and forgotten hunting village, but as the kingdom
expanded its territory further to the west, into the Elven Forest Reaches, the
new west-east trade route led through
this forest, and soon the city grew and continued to grow.
Indeed, the area
around the settlement was clear-cut and prepared for construction- at least
close to the walls, where torches illuminated the area.
They arrived at the
gate, which was opened after a short exchange of calls with the gate wardens,
and entered the city.
It must have been one
of the richer areas. The houses on both sides of the road were two storeys high
with tiled roofs and modestly decorated front walls. The street was clean and
even, lit by a few silent torch-bearing passers-by. It branched out in a few
places, but they kept to it until they reached a small square. Sounds of
shouting and laugher were coming from one of the building. The man guessed that
this was an inn.
The guards left him
there. He thanked them for the escort, gave his horse to the inn’s stable boy
and entered the building.
