The pair ushered their
mount to keep going.
‘It’s large for a city
in the middle of nowhere. Why would people want to live here?’, Alvaren asked.
‘It’s not “nowhere”,
Shirral replied. ‘We’re on the main trade route coming from the west and
heading towards the Capital. Or, almost on it. It’s the wide road that enters
the city over there;, she pointed at the western part of the settlement, ‘and
goes north, back to the forests, and east again.
‘And the road heading
into the mountains?’
‘That connects a big
mining complex with the city. Another reason for settling down here.’
‘And the road we’re
on?’
‘It goes south, to the
desert. Somewhere along the way it branches out to the west, into the Evlen
Forest Reaches’, she paused. ‘Shouldn’t you know that?’
‘Know what?’
She sighed.
‘Are you trying to
tell me I said all that for nothing?’
